Virtual Power Plant

5 years of sonnenVPP

For half a decade, the sonnenVPP has been providing more stability to electricity grids and more financial rewards for customers.

Together we are shaping the energy system of the future.

The sonnenVPP is a network of thousands of sonnen batteries that works like a regular power plant - only more efficient and sustainable. Five years ago, it was the first large-scale virtual power plant made up of home storage systems to be authorised for the balancing energy market in Germany. Ever since, it has been balancing out fluctuations in supply and demand in the electricity grid. The revenues for this service go to the participants in the sonnenVPP. A milestone for a secure, clean and affordable energy supply.

Entering a new energy era

With its VPP technology, sonnen is one of the pioneers of a modern energy system. The use of flexible storage resources to alleviate grid fluctuations is a basic prerequisite for integrating renewable energies into the electricity grid. By qualifying for the balancing energy market in 2018, sonnenVPP took a significant step towards the energy transition.

The power plant of the future is a network

Virtual power plants are becoming increasingly important for security of supply. The larger the network, the better. This doesn't only apply to home storage systems, other large-scale consumers can also become part of the sonnenVPP in the future. In 2023, sonnen already successfully tested the networking of electric cars. Instead of burdening the grid, they will become an active and stabilising part of the energy system.
