Northern Territory Home & Business Battery Scheme

The Home and Business Battery Scheme supports the Northern Territory Government’s plan for 50 percent renewable energy by 2030. As part of this plan, the Territory has introduced the scheme for home and business owners who can apply for a grant to install a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system including a home battery, or add solar battery storage to an existing PV system.

Eligible homeowners and businesses can access a grant of $400 per kilowatt hour of usable battery system capacity, up to a maximum grant of $5,000. The Northern Territory Home & Business Battery Scheme ends on 30 June 2024 5:30 PM (ACST).

The Northern Territory Government is encouraging the uptake of solar PV with battery storage systems because it contributes to stronger grid stability - while also reducing power system costs and reducing demand for gas generation during peak periods. The grant is eligible to recipients regardless of their electricity provider.

The funding from the Home and Business Battery Scheme can be used to buy and install a solar photovoltaic (PV) with an eligible battery and inverter, or an eligible battery inverter only (e.g. if you already have solar PV installed).

Scheme eligibility and applications – how does it work?

Firstly, it’s important to note that to be eligible to apply for the scheme, the product must be an approved home battery system that has been assessed as 'virtual power plant capable', like a sonnenBatterie. When you choose a sonnen product, you also get peace of mind in that our accredited and certified installers receive in-house training and accreditation, and are backed by our local service and warranty support teams.

The process of applying for the scheme is:

  1. Assess your suitability for a battery and research suitable products
  2. Review your eligibility criteria as per the below and the scheme terms and conditions
  3. Get a quote from a qualified system installer or provider such as sonnen
  4. Apply online through GrantsNT to receive your unique voucher number
  5. Complete your application
  6. Arrange the installation of your home battery system
  7. Pay your installer or provider using your voucher amount as part payment
  8. Enjoy the benefits

Scheme eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the NT Home and Business Battery Scheme, you need to meet the below criteria:

  • You are a registered owner of a residential property in the Northern Territory, or
  • You are a registered Northern Territory business, or
  • You are a not-for-profit or community organisation operating in the Northern Territory in either owned or leased premises

In addition, the selection and installation process must ensure the below are followed:

  • Eligible works must only commence after an application has been approved
  • Eligible works must be completed within six calendar months of the date of issue of the voucher
  • The grant is being used for an eligible system that has been assessed as 'virtual power plant capable'

The Home and Business Battery Scheme is the result of a decision by the Northern Territory Government to provide once-off funding to increase the uptake of installation of batteries to solar PV systems in Northern Territory homes and businesses. The scheme will end when the funds allocated have been fully committed.

Benefits of home battery storage

Installing a home battery to store the energy your rooftop solar PV system generates is an excellent investment and provides a wide range of benefits. Here are three of the many reasons why you should consider applying for the Northern Territory Home and Business Battery Scheme to assist with the purchase of a battery.

  • Blackout prevention: Some home batteries, like the sonnenBatterie Evo, enable you to keep lighting and appliances powered at home during a blackout with a backup power feature
  • Emissions reduction: Reducing reliance on grid electricity by using solar helps households to reduce their carbon footprint and lowers the impact our lifestyles have on the environment
  • Energy independence: Installing a home battery can help to deliver greater independence from the grid, reduce exposure to rising energy prices and lower your electricity bills.
